Visiting Gates of the Arctic


If you’re planning a journey to Alaska, you may as well consider visiting Gates of the Arctic National Park. This is the least visited of all national parks, with less than 10,000 visitors in 2018. So if the crowds of those other parks become too much for you to handle, well, there’s always Gates…

Here are some things you’ll want to know before visiting Gates of the Arctic.

Bettles: A small village located approximately 50 miles southeast of the park, this place is home to a population of around 12 people and serves as a popular jumping-off point for visitors to the park. It’s safe to assume everyone here knows one another, so if you go telling tales here, they’ll catch up with you.

Coldfoot: Located approximately 120 miles southwest of the park, this small town serves as a stop for travelers along the Dalton Highway. Everyone here knows everyone else too.

Wiseman: A small community located approximately 30 miles south of the park, Wiseman is a historic gold-mining town that is now home to a small number of year-round residents. Yep, these folk know one another too…

Wiseman Wilderness Lodge: A historic log cabin lodge located in the town of Wiseman, just outside of the park boundaries. The lodge offers comfortable guest rooms with rustic decor, shared bathrooms, and a communal kitchen. (907) 678-4456.

Bettles Lodge: Located in the small village of Bettles, this lodge offers a range of accommodation options including cabins, hotel rooms, and a campground. They also offer guided tours and activities such as dog sledding and aurora viewing. (907) 692-5151.

Yukon River Camp: Located on the Dalton Highway, this roadhouse offers a variety of dining options including burgers, sandwiches, and soups. They also have a small store selling snacks, drinks, and camping supplies. (907) 669-2321.

Wiseman General Store: This small store located in the town of Wiseman offers groceries, snacks, and basic camping supplies. They also serve coffee and baked goods. (907) 678-4400.
